Time is an investment and a decision -- about what environment you want to let influence your growth.
When it comes to looking for a new internship, a new full-time job, etc ... we are perhaps simply looking for a space that will help us thrive as whole human beings.
And it takes a whole lot more to create a good growing environment than being given a job and a laundry list of meetings and tasks.
We're not simply looking to "do" the "job". We're looking to "grow". We're breathing life into the things we create, the relationships we build, the new ideas we voice. Our lives meld into our work and vice versa. No matter what we're doing, it's art, and it's living and life-giving craft. Because we ourselves are living and growing and creating.
"Job search" maybe doesn't need to be seen as simply finding a way to make a living. How about finding a space to further explore interests and grow in ways I've not predicted? And what if, instead of finding the "perfect, smart, qualifying" candidate, we approach talent management as finding people we want to help nurture, to teach, to mentor?
Some of us are already doing these things, and it's these spaces where I've found the inspiration and the courage to voice this thought.
The culture needs to change. More precisely, we need to amplify and cultivate the little pockets of space with these healthy mindsets. We are not commodities with fixed market value. We are here, learning and changing with every second. Every one of our thoughts, experiences, histories, and knowledge makes us who we are, and that's more than enough. We have ambitions, interests, and little sparks inside of us.
Life is more than simply taking the steps, as we emerge into adulthood and ripen into new depths of flavor with new experiences that shape us and help us see things in new ways. Though numbers and labels and titles make it seem otherwise, we are all growing together.
From when we are very young to when we are much older, we are interdependent people. Who raised us, helped us learn how to say our first few words? Who was there for you in life's most difficult moments? And who will take care of us when we are terminally ill?
In the end, we want a society that acknowledges every being as precious and growing. We want to extend our love to everyone, not only because it's good for us all to do so, but because we understand that underneath everything, we are all reaching for something that touches us inside, inching toward a new potentiality for ourselves/our communities/the world.
"Keep at it. You can do it."
Not "productive", but creative.
